Files
Keep photos and documents with the item they belong to: a scan of your passport on the Passport item, the warranty PDF on a laptop, the insurance card on a medical record. Files are encrypted on your device the moment you add them, just like the rest of your vault.
What you can attach
- Photos from your camera or photo library
- Documents of any type: PDFs, scans, spreadsheets, text files and so on. PDFs, text, Markdown and CSV files also open inside LockYit
- Up to 25 MB per file, and as many files per item as you like
Files are stored inside your vault, not in your photo library or Files app. Once a file is added, you can delete the original from your phone if you only want the protected copy.
Adding files
To an item you're viewing
- Open the item.
- Tap the paperclip (attach_file) in the toolbar to open its Files screen.
- Use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to choose where the file comes from:
- Camera (phones and tablets): take one or more photos now (see Taking several photos).
- Photos: pick one or more pictures. On a computer this opens a file picker limited to images.
- Documents: pick one or more files of any type.
Once an item has files, the Files panel at the bottom of the detail view has the same three buttons, so you can add more without leaving the item.
From the Home screen
The action bar on the Home screen has a paperclip button (and a camera button on phones and tablets). Use it when you have the file first and the item second:
- Tap the paperclip or camera button and pick or take your files.
- Choose where they go:
- New item: pick an item type and fill in the details. The files are attached when you save.
- Existing item: search your vault for the item. LockYit opens it afterwards so you can see where the files went.
When you choose New item, the files wait at the top of the editor as thumbnails until you save. Tap one to see it full size, or tap its × to leave it out. If you leave the editor without saving, nothing is added.
Taking several photos
On a phone or tablet, the camera can take several photos in one go, for example the front and back of a card and a receipt that goes with it:
- Tap Camera (on an item, or on the Home screen) and take the first photo. If you change your mind before taking one, close the camera and nothing happens.
- The photo appears on a review screen. Tap Take another to go back to the camera for the next one. Repeat for as many as you need.
- Check your photos:
- Tap a photo to see it full size. Swipe to move between photos, and pinch or double-tap to zoom.
- Tap the × on a photo, or the delete button (delete) while viewing it, to remove one that didn't come out. Undo brings it back.
- Tap Use N photos. They are then added just like a single photo: to the item you're on, or, from the Home screen, to a new or existing item.
If you close the review screen with photos on it, LockYit asks before discarding them. Photos you take this way never go to your photo library: until you add them they exist only inside LockYit, and they are deleted as soon as they are added (encrypted) or discarded.
While editing an item
The Add Field sheet in the editor has a Files row that opens the item's Files screen. A new item has to be saved once before you can add files to it.
Adding, renaming or deleting a file takes effect immediately. It is not part of the item's unsaved edits, so choosing Discard changes in the editor doesn't undo it.
The Files panel
When an item has files, a Files panel is pinned to the bottom of its detail view:
- A row of thumbnails, one per file. Photos show a small preview and other files show an icon for their type.
- Tap a thumbnail to open that file.
- When there are more files than fit, a See all tile opens the full Files screen.
- The buttons in the panel header add more files. The arrow collapses the panel if you want the room back, and LockYit remembers that until the app is closed.
Items without files show no panel at all. The toolbar paperclip shows a badge with the number of files when there are any.
The Files screen
The Files screen lists every file on an item with its size and type, under a summary of how many files there are and how much space they take.
- Tap a file to open it.
- The menu (⋮) on each file lets you Send file, Open in another app, Download, Rename or Delete it.
- The menu in the toolbar has Send all and Delete all. Delete all asks you to confirm first.
Viewing a file
Tap a file to open it. Photos, PDFs, text files, Markdown and CSV or TSV spreadsheets open right inside LockYit, decrypted only in memory, so no unencrypted copy is written to your device. Other kinds of file can be downloaded or opened in another app (see Files LockYit can't show).
When the item has more than one file, you can move between them without going back:
- Swipe left or right.
- Use the arrow buttons below the file, either side of the controls. At the first or last file, the arrow that leads nowhere is greyed out.
- On a computer, press the ← and → keys.
The title bar shows the file's name and where it is in the set, for example 1 of 3. Each file opens at its normal size, without the zoom or rotation of the one before.
Photos
Photos open with these controls:
- Zoom by pinching, double-tapping, or with the zoom buttons.
- Pan by dragging once you've zoomed in. While a photo is zoomed in, dragging moves around the photo rather than to the next file.
- Rotate left or right. This only changes how you're looking at the photo. The file itself is never changed.
- Full screen hides everything but the photo.
On a computer you can also use the keyboard. See Keyboard shortcuts.
PDFs
- Scroll through the pages. The bar below shows where you are, for example 1 / 3.
- Zoom with the zoom buttons or by pinching. The level shows between the buttons.
- Fit to screen shows the whole page again.
- Full screen hides everything but the document.
A password-protected PDF asks for its password when you open it, and the password works until you close the file. If the password is wrong, LockYit says That password didn't work. Try again. If you cancel, the PDF stays locked: This PDF needs its password to be viewed.
Text files
Plain text files (.txt, .log, .json, .xml, .yaml, .ini, .conf, .toml, .env and similar) open as text.
- Smaller text and Larger text change the text size. Reset text size puts it back.
- Wrap lines fits long lines to the screen. Don't wrap lines keeps each line whole, and you scroll sideways to read it.
- Full screen hides everything but the text.
Markdown
Markdown files (.md, .markdown) open formatted, with headings, lists, checklists, tables and quotes.
To keep your vault private, LockYit never loads pictures from the internet that a Markdown file points to. They show as Image not loaded instead. Tapping a web link opens it in your browser; other kinds of link don't open.
The text size controls and full screen work as for text files.
Spreadsheets (CSV and TSV)
CSV and TSV files open as a table. The first row stays at the top as the header and row numbers stay down the side while you scroll, even in a sheet of thousands of rows. Values are shown exactly as written, without being turned into numbers or dates.
The text size controls and full screen work as for text files. A file with nothing in it shows This file has no rows.
Keyboard shortcuts
On a computer you can use the keyboard in every viewer:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| + / - | Zoom in / out (larger / smaller text for text, Markdown and spreadsheets) |
| 0 | Fit to screen (reset text size) |
| R / Shift+R | Rotate right / left (photos only) |
| F | Full screen on or off |
| Esc | Leave full screen |
| ← / → | Previous / next file |
Files LockYit can't show
Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, RTF files, archives and other kinds of file can't be shown inside LockYit. They show their type and size, with a Download bar below.
Downloading and opening in another app
The menu (⋮) in the viewer's title bar, and the menu on each file in the Files screen, has two more ways to use a file:
- Download saves a copy of the file wherever you choose, using your device's save dialog.
- Open in another app opens the file in another app on your device, such as your PDF reader or word processor. If no app on your device can open it, LockYit says so and suggests downloading it instead.
Send file in the title bar hands the file to another app through your device's share sheet. See Sending files.
A downloaded file is an ordinary copy outside LockYit, no longer protected by your vault's encryption. Delete it when you no longer need it.
To open a file in another app, LockYit writes a temporary, unencrypted copy for that app to read. On iPhone and iPad, LockYit deletes it as soon as it has handed the file over. On other devices the copy stays while the other app may still be reading it, and LockYit deletes it when the vault locks or the app next starts.
Sending files
- Send file hands a single file to another app through your device's share sheet (Mail, Messages, AirDrop, a printer and so on).
- Send all on the Files screen sends every file on the item at once.
- Send in an item's toolbar sends the item's fields together with its files. Passwords and other hidden fields are left out, just like Copy all fields. When the item has files, the fields go along as a small text file, because some apps drop plain text when files are attached.
Once a file is sent, it's outside LockYit and no longer protected by your vault's encryption.
Renaming and deleting
- Rename changes the name you see in LockYit. On your other devices the new name appears without the file being sent again.
- Delete removes the file from this device and from your synced devices. Deleting an item deletes its files too. Deleting a file while viewing it moves on to the next one.
Finding items that have files
Items with files show a paperclip badge on the Home screen, next to the sharing badge when an item is shared. When there's more than one file, the badge shows how many.
To see only those items, tap Has files under the search bar. Tap the chip again to show everything.
Files on your other devices
When Local Sync is on, files sync to your other devices along with their items:
- The file's name and details arrive first, and the file itself follows. Large files can take a little longer.
- Until a file has fully arrived, it shows as Not available on this device and can't be opened yet. It becomes available on its own once the transfer finishes. If a transfer is interrupted, it carries on from where it stopped the next time the devices see each other.
- Photo thumbnails are made on each device from the file itself. A photo that has just synced shows a type icon for a moment until its thumbnail is ready.
- A device still on LockYit 1.1 doesn't receive files, since Files are new in 1.2. It keeps syncing everything else, and gets the files by itself once it's updated.
Files on shared items
When you share an item, its files go with it, re-encrypted for the person you share with:
- View only: they can see, open and send the files, but can't add, rename or delete them.
- Edit access: they can also add, rename and delete files, and those changes come back to you.
- Adding or removing a file on a shared item updates the other person's copy the next time your devices are connected, just like any other change to the item.
- Files follow their item when a share ends: whatever happens to the received item (see Access rules for received items) happens to its files too.
- If the other person is still on LockYit 1.1, they get the item without its files. Their files arrive once they update to 1.2. Their edits to the item never remove your files.
Backups and export
- Backups include your files, still encrypted. Restoring a backup brings them back.
- Export includes every file, unencrypted, in a
filesfolder of the export. Importing that export into LockYit attaches the files to their items again.
Privacy & security
- Each file is encrypted on your device with its own key, which is in turn protected by your vault key. File names are encrypted too.
- Files are stored in LockYit's private app storage, under random names. Someone browsing your device's storage sees neither the contents nor the names.
- Opened photos are held in memory only while the vault is unlocked, and cleared when it locks.
- Photos you take with the camera are unencrypted only until you add them. LockYit deletes its copy once the photo is added, or as soon as you discard it.
- Files never pass through LockYit's servers. They move only between your own devices and the people you share with, over your local network.
