The Local‑First Life
A manifesto for people who want their digital life back.
Who this is for
You are the careful person. You use strong passwords. You turn on two-factor authentication. You did everything right, and you still feel one incident report away from the dark web.
You are not paranoid. You are paying attention.
The cloud vault is the target
Most vaults keep your encrypted data on their servers. That makes those servers a target: one place that holds the secrets of millions of people.
The pattern is always the same:
- A company promises to protect your data
- To do that, they collect your data on their servers
- Their servers become a target
- The target eventually gets hit
- You carry the consequences
If your data sits on someone else's server, someone else's breach becomes your breach.
The safest server is no server at all.
Five principles of the local-first life
1. Encrypt before anything is stored
Everything, including attached files and their names, is encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before it's written anywhere. Only your master password unlocks it. We can't see it.
2. Keep your data, and your backups, where you can see them
Your vault lives on your devices. Automatic Backup keeps encrypted copies in a folder you choose. Our servers never receive your vault, your files, or your backups.
Your backups should live on a drive you can hold, not a server you can't.
3. Work offline by default
Open, search, edit, and use your 2FA codes with no internet at all. Your data doesn't depend on our servers being up.
4. Sync without a middleman
Local Sync keeps your devices in step directly over your own network, end-to-end encrypted.
5. Share on your terms
Share one item with one person, device to device, re-encrypted just for them. Never your whole vault, and never through our servers.
Where LockYit fits
LockYit is a local-first Secure Information Manager. Your digital life is more than passwords: LockYit holds 43 item types, from passwords and 2FA codes to passports, bank accounts and insurance, and the scans, PDFs, and photos that go with them.
People stay in the cloud for four reasons: sync, sharing, backup, and their documents. LockYit answers all four without our servers ever holding your data.
- Local Sync keeps your phone, tablet and computer in step over your own Wi-Fi, end-to-end encrypted.
- Local Sharing sends a single item to someone on the same network, with view or edit access.
- Automatic Backup keeps encrypted backups in a folder you choose, such as a USB drive, an external disk or a network folder.
- Files keeps your documents with the items they belong to, encrypted on your device with a per-file key. File names are encrypted too.
Private by default. Connected when you choose.
We collect only what your account needs to work, and we will never sell, rent, or monetize your personal information.
