Creating Your Account

Setting up your LockYit account is the first step to securing your digital life. Here's how it works.

Registration Process​

1. Open LockYit​

When you first launch LockYit, you'll see the Create Account screen. It fits on one screen, so you don't need to scroll to reach any field or the Create Account button. On a phone, the top of the screen shows the founding-user offer while it runs; while you type, the offer tucks away so the fields and button stay above the keyboard.

2. Enter Your Email​

Enter a valid email address. This will be used for:

  • Account identification
  • Password recovery (in combination with your recovery key)

3. Enter Your Master Password​

Your master password is the single key that unlocks your entire vault.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 8 characters (we recommend 12+)
  • Mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Include numbers and special characters

Best Practices:

  • Use a passphrase - e.g., sunny-beach-umbrella-2024!
  • Avoid personal information like birthdays or pet names
  • Don't reuse passwords from other accounts
  • Consider using a memorable sentence: ILovedParis@Summer2019!

4. Confirm Your Password​

Re-enter your master password to confirm it. This ensures you typed it correctly.

5. Confirm Your Age and Accept the Terms​

Tick the box to confirm that you are 16 or older and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Tap Terms of Service or Privacy Policy to read them first.

6. Complete Registration​

Tap Create Account. LockYit will:

  1. Generate your encryption keys locally
  2. Set up your secure vault
  3. Ask you to verify your email address. You can choose Skip for now, but you'll be asked again the next time you open LockYit, and recovery features stay unavailable until your email is verified.
  4. Take you through a short Quick Setup: your Recovery Key, where your backups go, and biometric unlock
  5. Show you your home screen

Quick Setup​

Quick Setup gets your vault ready in a few steps. Each step turns something on, and the progress at the top shows which step you're on (for example Step 2 of 4). There's one step fewer on a device without Face ID, Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor or Windows Hello.

If you close LockYit part way through, setup picks up where you left off the next time you unlock it. A step you've already finished stays done.

Step 1: Save Your Recovery Key​

Your Recovery Key is the only way back into your vault if you forget your master password.

  1. Tap Copy, or tap Download PDF to save it as a PDF
  2. Store it somewhere safe, such as a USB drive or a printed copy
  3. Tick I have saved my recovery key in a safe place
  4. Tap Continue

You can't skip this step: Continue stays unavailable until you've copied or downloaded the key and ticked the box.

Never Lose Your Recovery Key

Without your recovery key, there is no way to recover access to your vault.

Your data is encrypted on your device and we cannot decrypt it. You can only access your vault by using your master password, or recover access to your vault by using your recovery key.

Step 2: Back Up Your Vault​

LockYit backs up your vault automatically. Backups are encrypted, and only your account can restore them. Choose where they go:

  • Choose Folder picks a folder on a USB drive, another disk, a network folder or a cloud folder, so a copy survives if this device is lost or damaged. Once chosen, the step shows Backups go to the folder; tap Continue, or Choose a Different Folder.
  • Keep on This Device keeps backups in LockYit's own storage on this device. LockYit asks you to confirm, because backups kept only on this device are lost with it. Tap Keep on This Device again to confirm.

You can change the location any time in Settings > Backups. See Automatic Backup.

Step 3: Unlock with Face ID or Touch ID (Optional)​

This step only appears if your device supports biometric unlock. It's named after your device's method: Face ID, Touch ID, Fingerprint, Face unlock or Windows Hello.

  • Tap Turn On Face ID (or your device's method) and follow your device's prompt. Your master password still works whenever you want to use it.
  • Tap Not Now to skip. You can turn it on later in Settings > Security.

If setup resumed after LockYit was closed, enter your master password first. If biometric unlock can't be turned on, LockYit says so and you can try again later in Settings > Security.

Step 4: You're All Set​

The last step points to the settings you're most likely to want to change:

  • Theme and Color: light or dark mode and your accent color, in Settings > Appearance
  • Language: the language the app uses, in Settings > Language & Region
  • Look and Feel: flat or rounded corners, grid or list view, and more, in Settings > Appearance

Tap Go to My Vault to start using LockYit.

After Registration​

If You Skipped Email Verification​

If you skipped email verification, LockYit goes straight to your vault and runs Quick Setup once your email is verified. You can also create and save your Recovery Key from Settings at any time:

  1. Go to Settings → Account
  2. Tap Recovery Key
  3. Follow the instructions to generate and save your recovery key
    • Tap on Download PDF to save a PDF
    • Alternatively, you can copy the recovery key to your clipboard
  4. Store this file in a safe place (USB drive, printed copy, etc.). You'll need this key if you forget your master password.
  5. Tap I've saved my recovery key in a safe place to confirm you've saved it.
  6. Tap Save Recovery Key in Account to save it to your account. If you do not do this, you will not be able to recover your account if you forget your master password.
Important

Going through all the steps given above is mandatory for the creation of your recovery key. Otherwise the recovery key will not be registered in your account, and you will not be able to recover your account if you forget your master password.

Clearing Data on This Device​

Clear all data in Settings also resets Quick Setup, so the next account you create or sign in to on this device goes through it again.
