Why You Should Regularly Back Up Your LockYit Data

Your vault holds some of the most important information in your digital life - passwords, financial details, secure notes, and more. Losing access to it without a backup would be a painful experience. Regular backups are a simple habit that can save you from a very stressful situation.

Why Backups Matter

No device is immune to failure. Hard drives fail, phones get lost or stolen, operating system reinstalls happen, and accidental data deletion is always a possibility. If your LockYit vault only exists in one place, any of these events could mean permanent data loss.

A backup gives you a safety net. With a recent backup on hand, recovering your vault is straightforward - without one, your data may be gone for good.

Local Backup and Restore in LockYit

LockYit includes a built-in backup and restore feature that lets you create encrypted snapshots of your vault and save them to your device. These backups are fully encrypted with your master password, so the backup file itself is safe to store on an external drive, a USB stick, or any location you trust.

Creating a backup is simple:

  1. Open Settings and go to the Backups tab.
  2. Tap Create Backup to generate an encrypted backup file.
  3. Save the file to a location outside your primary device - an external drive or a folder you back up separately.

Restoring from a backup is equally straightforward:

  1. Open Settings → Backups.
  2. Tap Restore Backup and select your backup file.
  3. Enter your master password to decrypt and restore your data.

LockYit also keeps a list of your recent local backups so you can manage them directly from the app.

Tip: From the Local Backups screen in Settings, you can download any saved backup to a folder on your device. Once downloaded, move that file to a separate device - such as another computer, a USB drive, or a trusted external storage location. Keeping a copy off your primary device means you can still recover your vault even if that device is lost, damaged, or reset.

For full details, see the Backup and Restore documentation.

Available in the Free Version

Local backup and restore is available to all LockYit users - no paid plan required. We believe that protecting your data against loss is a fundamental feature, not a premium one. Whether you are just getting started or have been using LockYit for years, you have full access to backups right now.

We recommend creating a backup after any significant change to your vault - after adding new items, updating credentials, or reorganising your data.

Coming Soon: Encrypted Cloud Backups

For users who want an extra layer of convenience and redundancy, we are working on encrypted cloud backup storage as part of the upcoming LockYit paid plan.

This will allow you to automatically sync your encrypted vault backups to the cloud - so even if your local device and your external drives are both unavailable, your data is still recoverable. Like all backups in LockYit, cloud backups will remain end-to-end encrypted. Your data will be stored in the cloud in a form that only you can decrypt.

The paid plan is expected to launch in the coming weeks. We will share more details as we get closer to release.

In the meantime, make sure you are taking advantage of local backups today. A few seconds spent creating a backup could save you from losing everything. If you have any questions about the backup process, our documentation has you covered.
