Do Not Forget Your Master Password
LockYit is designed so that only you can access your data. That means there is one password you absolutely cannot afford to forget: your master password.
The One Password That Matters
Unlike most apps, LockYit does not store your master password anywhere - not on your device, and not on our servers. It is the key that unlocks your entire vault. If you forget it, no one can recover it for you, not even the LockYit team.
That is not a flaw - it is the point. Zero-knowledge encryption means your data stays private. But it also means the responsibility of remembering your master password rests entirely with you.
Choose a Password That Is Hard to Guess
Your master password should be something only you would know - and something a stranger could never guess.
A strong master password:
- Is long - at least 16 characters
- Is not based on personal details - avoid names, birthdays, or common words
- Is unique - not used anywhere else
- Is memorable to you - a passphrase like
winter-lamp-forest-88!is both strong and easier to remember than a random string of characters
Write it down and keep it somewhere physically secure - such as a sealed envelope in a safe place - until you are confident you have it memorised.
Download Your Recovery Kit
If you ever lose access to your master password, your Recovery Kit is your only way back in. It contains your encrypted recovery key, which can be used to restore access to your account.
If you have not downloaded it yet, do it now - before you need it.
To download your Recovery Kit:
- Open LockYit and go to Settings.
- Navigate to the Account section.
- Tap or click on Recovery Key.
- Tap or click on Generate New.
- Save displayed code, or print the PDF and store it somewhere safe - a physical location you control.
- Confirm that you have saved the code or key, and then proceed to tap or click on Save Recovery Key in Account.
- Discard any old recovery kit files to avoid confusion.
A few important reminders:
- Do not store it on an unlocked device or in an easily accessible cloud folder.
- Consider keeping a copy in a separate location from your home.
- Treat it like an important legal document, because it is.
For full details, see the Recovery Kit documentation.
Your master password and your Recovery Kit work together as your safety net. Take a moment today to make sure both are in order - it is far easier to prepare now than to recover later.
