Set Up Automatic Backup in LockYit 1.2

Security focussed. Privacy centric.

LockYit keeps your vault on your devices, not on a server. That is what keeps it private, and it also means the best protection against losing a device is a backup somewhere else. LockYit 1.2 makes that automatic: choose a folder once, and LockYit keeps encrypted backups there for you.

Where Your Backups Go

You choose the folder. Good choices are ones that survive losing your phone or computer:

  • a USB drive or memory card
  • an external disk
  • a network folder, such as a home NAS
  • on a phone or tablet, a cloud storage folder such as one in iCloud Drive

Backups go straight from your device to that folder. LockYit's servers never receive them, and only your account can restore them.

Setting It Up

  1. Open Settings → Backups (or Tools → Backups).
  2. Tap Back Up to Folder and choose your folder.
  3. LockYit turns on Automatic Backup and makes the first backup straight away.

That's it. By default LockYit backs up when you make changes, shortly after you stop editing. You can switch to once a day or once a week under Automatic Backup on the same screen. A new backup is only made when your vault has changed since the last one.

For every option, see the Backup and Restore guide.

Looks After Itself

  • Tidies up. LockYit keeps the 5 most recent backups, plus one a day for a week and one a week for a month. The newest is never deleted.
  • Doesn't fuss about unplugged drives. If the drive isn't connected, LockYit waits and backs up as soon as it's back. No error messages.
  • Checks its work. Every backup is read back and verified when it's made, and again before a restore touches your vault.
  • Stores files once. The photos and documents you attach with Files are kept once beside your backups rather than copied into every one.
  • Families can share a drive. Each person's backups go in a folder named after their account, so everyone can tell theirs apart.

On phones and tablets, backups run while LockYit is open, and one that fell due while it was closed runs when you next open it.

Always Know Where You Stand

On a computer, the status bar at the bottom of the window shows when you last backed up. On a phone or tablet, the Backup button in the title bar changes colour if something needs you. And if your vault hasn't been backed up for a week, a reminder appears above your items.

Restoring

Open Backups, pick a backup from Your backups, and tap Restore Backup. On a new device, sign in, choose the same folder with Back Up to Folder, and your old device's backups appear in the list. See Restoring on a new device.

Automatic Backup is free for everyone. Update to LockYit 1.2, plug in a drive, and give your vault a second home in two minutes.
