v1.2.0
What's New
LockYit 1.2 lets you keep photos and documents with the items they belong to, backs up your vault automatically to a folder you choose, and shows at a glance whether you are synced and backed up. Signing in and unlocking are quicker, computers get a menu bar, command palette and keyboard shortcuts, and phones work in landscape. It also raises the minimum iOS and macOS versions, so check System requirements before you update.
Files
Attach photos and documents to any item in your vault: a scan of your passport on the Passport item, the warranty PDF on a laptop, the insurance card on a medical record. Read the Files guide.
- Photos and documents - Take a photo, pick from your photo library, or choose any document. Each file can be up to 25 MB, and an item can have as many files as you like.
- Encrypted like the rest of your vault - Each file is encrypted on your device the moment you add it, and so is its name. Files never pass through LockYit's servers.
- View files inside LockYit - Zoom, pan, rotate and go full screen on photos. PDFs and other documents open in the app of your choice.
- Add files from anywhere - Use the paperclip on an item, the Files panel at the bottom of an item, or the paperclip and camera buttons on the Home screen when you have the file first and need to pick the item after.
- Find items with files - Items with files show a paperclip badge on the Home screen, and the Has files filter shows only those items.
- On all your devices - With Local Sync on, files follow their items to your other devices. A large file that is interrupted partway carries on where it stopped the next time your devices connect.
- Shared with the item - When you share an item, its files go with it. People with edit access can add, rename and delete files too.
- Included in backups and exports - Backups keep your files encrypted. Exports include them in a
filesfolder, and importing that export into LockYit attaches them to their items again. - Works alongside LockYit 1.1 - Devices still on 1.1 keep syncing and sharing with 1.2 as before; they just don't receive files. When a device updates, its files arrive by themselves.
Automatic Backup
Keep encrypted backups of your vault on a USB drive, an external disk, a network folder or a cloud storage folder, without having to remember. Read the Backup and Restore guide.
- Set it up once - Tap Back Up to Folder and choose a folder. LockYit makes the first backup straight away, then backs up when you make changes, once a day or once a week.
- Only when something changed - A new backup is made only when your vault changed since the last one, and attached files are stored once rather than copied into every backup.
- Tidies up after itself - Keeps the 5 most recent backups, plus one a day for a week and one a week for a month.
- Drives that come and go - If the drive isn't connected, LockYit waits and backs up as soon as it's back, with no error messages.
- Straight to your folder - Backups go directly from your device to the folder. LockYit's servers never receive them, and only your account can restore them.
- Checked before it counts - Every backup is read back and verified when it's made, and again before a restore touches your vault.
- A reminder when you need it - If your vault hasn't been backed up for a week, or automatic backup hasn't been able to finish for a day, a reminder appears above your items.
- One Backups screen - Back up to your folder or to this device, set up Automatic Backup, and restore, export or delete any backup, all in one place.
- Phones and tablets too - On Android, iPhone and iPad, backups run while LockYit is open, and one that fell due while it was closed runs when you next open it.
Status at a glance
- Status bar on computers - A bar along the bottom of the window shows your item count, when you last synced and how many devices are online, when you last backed up, and a lock button. Click Sync or Backup for details and quick actions.
- Status buttons on phones and tablets - Sync and Backup buttons in the Home title bar change colour when something needs you, and open the same details.
- Appearance in one tap - Switch theme, colour and grid or list view from the palette icon, without opening Settings.
Read about status, menus and shortcuts.
Menus and shortcuts on computers
- Command palette - Press ⌘K on a Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux, type a few letters, and run any action or jump to any section.
- Keyboard shortcuts - Add an item, sync, lock, back up, open the password generator, switch theme or view, and move between sections without the mouse.
- A full menu bar - On macOS, Windows and Linux, with every action and almost every setting.
- A grouped Tools menu - Backup & Restore, Import & Export, Security and Maintenance, with shortcuts shown beside each entry.
Phones in landscape
Turn your phone sideways and LockYit now uses the width: search and filters move into the title bar, buttons become title bar icons, and items, editors, tasks and Settings show in two columns. On an item, Files, Sharing and the last update sit in a side panel you can open and close.
A simpler Local Sync screen
- One place for the big actions - The card at the top shows this device's live status, how many devices and people you sync with, and Sync all. It stays in view as you scroll.
- Tap to manage - Tap a device or person for Auto Sync, Full Sync, Repair and Remove, each with a line explaining what it does.
- Add device and Add person - Replace Pair and Setup Sharing. The email invite now lives under Add person, so it no longer takes up the bottom of the screen.
- Long lists stay tidy - Anything that needs attention comes first, and long lists show the first few with Show all.
- App version on each device - See which LockYit version each device and person is running.
Faster sign-in and unlock
- Biometrics first - The sign-in and lock screens now go straight to Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint, face unlock or Windows Hello. The password form appears only if you cancel or the scan fails, with a button to try again.
- One prompt, not two - LockYit now waits until it is fully on screen before asking for biometrics, so you are no longer asked to authenticate twice.
- Redesigned sign-in, lock and sign-up screens - A cleaner layout that fits any screen without scrolling and keeps the fields and main button in view while the keyboard is open. The screen also shows which account you are signing in to.
Improvements
- A clearer start for a new vault - An empty vault now shows one main action, quick shortcuts to scan a code, add a file or import, and a direct path to syncing your other devices or sharing with someone. If you signed in on a new device, it leads with syncing the items you already have elsewhere.
- Badges side by side - The sharing and Files badges now sit next to each other on item cards instead of overlapping.
- Consistent note formatting - Bulleted and numbered lists in notes now match the size of normal text, and the Small, Large and Huge text sizes scale with it.
- Clearer imports - Import preview and progress count items and files separately, so you can see exactly what came in.
- More reliable Local Sync - Fixed cases where changes could fail to reach another device automatically even though a manual sync worked.
- More reliable sharing - Removing a person now always reaches them, including when you remove them from a device other than the one that connected you, or while they are offline. A removal that arrives late no longer undoes a connection you have since set up again.
- Tasks - Task list counts now match the tasks shown, and Kanban columns scroll by touch; press and hold a card to move it.
System requirements
LockYit 1.2 needs newer versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS:
| Platform | LockYit 1.1 | LockYit 1.2 |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | iOS / iPadOS 13 or later | iOS / iPadOS 15 or later |
| Mac | macOS 11.5 Big Sur or later | macOS 12 Monterey or later |
- iPhone and iPad - Every device that can run iOS 13 can also run iOS 15, so if your device is still on iOS 13 or 14, update it in Settings > General > Software Update and you can install LockYit 1.2.
- Mac - If your Mac can't be updated past macOS Big Sur (mostly models from 2013 and 2014), it will stay on LockYit 1.1, which keeps working and keeps syncing with your devices on 1.2, apart from Files. Your vault is not affected.
Android, Windows and Linux requirements are unchanged.
